The Tsilhqot'in name for this place is Tsanlgen, meaning "dried beaver (skin)", and Chaunigan is likely an anglicization of Tsalngen (source: Tsilhqot'in National Government). Chaunigan Lake Recreation Site provides scenic views of the Coast Mountains in the distance, including Mount Tatlow (Ts?yl-os). The lake is a popular destination for fishing and back-country enthusiasts.
